American Music Awards: Alternative Music Artists to Look Out For

2020 has been a weird year. You've probably felt it. That slow, monotonous grind is starting to get to us. Next month, however, it seems that things might be changing a little bit. And no, I'm not talking about the election! I'm talking about the upcoming 2020 American Music Awards.

The 2020 AMA's (American Music Awards) will air on Sunday, November 22. You'll be able to catch some of your favorite alternative music bands, artists, songs, and albums in the running for various categories such as "Best Artist" and so much more. We will likely get a few performances, and hear more of the best songs to listen to this fall.

Today, I'll be focusing on a few highlights in the Alternative Music category, and what you should be watching for next month at the AMA's.

Billie Eilish

Up for "Favorite Social Artist" and "Favorite Artist - Alternative Rock", Billie Eilish proves to the music world that she is to be taken seriously. Though her career started "accidentally" when she uploaded her song "Ocean Eyes" to Soundcloud, it has since taken off and allowed her to become the massive artist that she is today. In fact, last year at the 2019 AMA's, Eilish became the first ever female solo artist to win in the Alt Rock category.

There is some controversy online as to what genre Billie's music would really fall under, but there's no denying the Alternative influences. Billie Eilish is definitely an artist to look out for this year.

Twenty One Pilots

One of my personal favorites, this alternative rock / rap / punk duo based out of Columbus, Ohio will show up once again at this year's AMA's. With only one nomination this time around, they'll be competing for the title of "Favorite Artist" in the alternative rock genre.

As a band, they've come a long way. Most recently, they released a quarantine-inspired single called "Level of Concern." But, since their big break a few years ago, twenty one pilots has been on nearly everyone's radar. With some of the best songs and albums of the decade, it's no surprise they've wound up being nominated for the 2020 AMA's.

Tame Impala

Let me be the first to tell you that Tame Impala should certainly be featured on a few of your fall playlists. Of their latest album, Pitchfork says, "It is easy to get lost in all the layers of groovy, time-traveling technicolor surround sound[.]" It's hard to disagree with that.

Coming from Australia, Tame Impala has been making waves all around the globe. Make sure that you keep your eyes open to see if they take home the award for "Favorite Artist - Alternative Rock."

Taylor Swift

Catching listeners by surprise, Taylor Swift dropped this stripped-down album back in July of this year. Released with almost no prior anticipation, Taylor found herself skirting farther away from her pop and country roots to focus on a more refined, alternative style. It's reminiscent of several popular indie artists like Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver, who actually collaborated with Taylor and is featured on one of the album's best tracks: "exile."

Taylor Swift's new, alternative album landed her nominations in categories such as "Favorite Female Artist", "Favorite Music Video", "Favorite Album - Pop/Rock", and even "Artist of the Year."

Conclusion

The 2020 American Music Awards may not be the most conventional award show, but it'll likely be a good one. Keep your eyes and ears open for more news and be sure to catch the show on Sunday, November 22.
